Purchase College Chapter

About Sigma Xi

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is an international honor society with over 70,000 active members. Membership is by invitation and is limited to research scientists and engineers. Sigma Xi chapters are found at colleges and universities as well as government and corporate research laboratories. The Purchase College Chapter received its charter in 1997. The chapter currently has over 50 Members and Associate Members who are students, faculty, and professional staff of Purchase College as well as residents of the surounding community.

Chapter Programs

Our chapter hosts Faculty Lectures each academic year, and co-sponsors one of the lectures in the Natural and Social Sciences Lecture Series. All lectures are free and open to the public. The chapter is also a co-sponsor of the Natural and Social Sciences Student Symposium, and chapter members are actively involved in a number of college programs supporting undergraduate research, such as the NIH Bridges Program . Each year, the Sigma Xi Award is given to a number of Purchase undergraduates who have demonstrated above average aptitude for scientific research. Award winners are nominated for Associate Membership in Sigma Xi and receive public acknowledgement of their achievements; the chapter pays their initiation fees and dues for the first year of membership. An honor society for students in the School of Natural and Social Sciences is in the planning stages.
